Keep the water level in the aquarium ½ inch below the top of your aquarium to allow snails to breathe. Keep in an appropriate size aquarium (5+ gallons), without too many snails per gallon of water to prevent overcrowding and ensure there is adequate food (no more than 1-2 snails per 5 gallons habitat). Dead snails will hang out of their shells when moved and will emit a foul odor. To tell whether a snail is alive, gently touch the operculum if the snail retracts, it is alive. Snails are most active at night and may remain very still during the day. This feature makes Nerite snails ideal pets, as they are incapable of overpopulating a freshwater aquarium. They will not reproduce in freshwater, as their offspring need minerals from saltwater to build their shells.

Nerite snails, however, are not hermaphroditic snails, so males and females are separate. Many snails are hermaphrodites (have both male and female reproductive organs), so they are able to reproduce very quickly and can overwhelm an aquarium fast, in just a few weeks. The opening to a snail’s shell is covered by a flap called an operculum that can close as a defense mechanism and to prevent their body from drying out. Snails also have a head and a large shell. They leave a slime trail as they move on their muscular foot. Snails have a large, muscular foot that they use to move around and can retract back into their shells. When the cyst bursts the new parasites will swim through the water to find a fish to feed from, the time when they are swimming is the time the treatment will attack.Typical freshwater snail appearance and behavior After the parasites have stopped feeding from the fish they will drop and begin to duplicate in a cyst on the bottom of the tank. White spot treatments require two doses to catch the parasites at their most delicate stage. The white spots you see on the fish is the mature stage of the parasites life cycle and will not be directly affected by treatment. As stress factors in the tank weaken the fish, parasites can reach dangerous numbers and will become harmful to their fish hosts.Ĭontrolling stress factors is key to preventing outbreaks and the recovery of your fish. Parasites are naturally present in aquariums and will be happily controlled by the immune system of your fish in small numbers. Often referred to as Itch or Ick, White spot is caused by the Ichyophirius parasite.
